5 reasons you should try cloth diapers

I never even considered using cloth diapers until I spent two days at the ABC Kids Expo in Las Vegas. There were several different manufactures and various packages. I was amazed at how different cloth diapers are now and how simple they seem to be.

When my sister had her first child almost 15 years ago she used cloth diapers. She used a diaper service back then; needless to say it didn’t last long. So when I had my daughter the thought never crossed my mind.

Now as I prepare for the birth of my second child I am strongly considering giving cloth diapers a shot. So I compiled a list of five reasons why I am considering cloth diapers and why you should too.

  1. Cloth diapers are healthy for your baby
Did you know there is a toxic chemical present in disposable diapers, called Dioxin. The chemical in various forms has been shown to cause cancer, birth defects, and skin disease. This toxic chemical is a by-product of the paper-bleaching process used in manufacturing disposable diapers so it’s possible that trace quantities may exist in the diapers themselves.
  2. Cloth diapers are better for the environment
Did you know disposable diapers are the 3rd largest single product filling up the nations landfills. I guess they aren’t as “disposable” as they claim.
  3. Cloth diapers are just as convenient
These aren’t your mothers’ cloth and pen diapers. Cloth diapers now are fitted with elastic in the legs and back area; they have easy hook and loop closures and some even have snaps. You can choose from different fabrics, colors, sizes, absorbency levels. You are sure to find the diaper that fits your needs.
  4. Cloth diapers are less expensive
Cloth diapers cost about ½ the price of disposables and don’t forget about the additional cost of the trash bags you would need to dispose of them.
  5. Cloth diapers are multifunctional
They can be used as changing pads, burp cloths, and spill cleanups for years to come.

If you decide to try cloth diapers or have already made the switch please let us know how you like them and what brand you decided to use. Our baby is due in December so we will let you know how they worked out for us.
